43rd INTERNATIONAL SUMMER ACADEMY FOR ORGANISTS
21 JULY - 2 AUGUST 2008

WELCOME TO HAARLEM!

For decades, organists have travelled to Haarlem in the Netherlands, to experience the International Summer Academy for Organists. Every other year, some 80-100 students from all over the world enjoy lessons by international leading organ professors, given on the most famous organ in the world: the Christian Müller instrument in the St. Bavokerk, situated in the historic centre of Haarlem. Since 2006, the restored Cavaillé Coll organ in the concert hall ‘Philharmonie Haarlem’, opposite St. Bavo, has also become an important venue for lessons and concerts. As well as these instruments, a range of other historical organs is featured in the academy programme. The Summer Academy also offers lectures and concerts, all of which are accessible to the academy students without additional charge.

The Summer Academy for Organists is open to both professional organists and organ students at an advanced stage in their studies, who wish to study aspects of organ literature and improvisation in greater detail.

In 2008, four composers were celebrated in the festival:
Olivier Messiaen and Hugo Distler, both born in 1908, as well as Julius Reubke, who died in 1858 and the little-known Dutch composer Gerard Bunk, (1888 - 1958)
whose best known composition is a beautiful 'Legende' for organ.

The International Organ Improvisation Competition and the International Summer Academy for Organists are organised as part of the International Organ Festival Haarlem.

CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION
=> Admission is open to those holding a music degree from a professional institution such as a University (BA, MA), Musikhochschule or Conservatoire. In addition, students who are nearing the end of their organ studies will also be admitted, but should include a letter of recommendation from their professor with the application. Students holding certificates from other institutions as mentioned above should first address to the organisation.
=> Every participant is expected to take an active part in at least one course. Active participants should have a technical mastery of a large proportion of the works on the repertoire list.

Please note:
*
Tuition will be given in English. It is therefore absolutely essential that active students understand English! If it is not possible for a professor to communicate properly with a student in English during the class, the professor has the right to request that student to become a ‘passive’ instead of an ‘active’ participant.

WHERE TO STAY
We can recommend a range of hotels, guest houses and apartments in Zandvoort aan Zee, a seaside resort 15 minutes by train from Haarlem. Early booking is strongly recommended, due to the increased tourist demand during the holiday season. For more information see the links.
Upon request (see the application form), the organisation can assist with the sourcing of Bed and Breakfast accommodation in private homes in Haarlem. The cost of Bed and Breakfast will be appr. €22,00 per night.
Please note:
=> the number of B&B addresses is limited and will be assigned on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis. The prompt submission of accommodation requests is therefore essential.
=> the nature of B&B accommodation may vary from a small room (e.g. without a table) to a whole apartment. We do not have information about the quality and nature of B&B accommodation.
=> in B&B addresses you should expect to honour the rules of your hosts, for example regarding whether or not you may cook, informing them of your times of arrival and departure each day etc. This may require some flexibility on your part.
=> The Festival organisation cannot be held responsible for the service and level of comfort found in B&B accommodation. Staying at such addresses does however give you the chance to meet local people and even to make life-long friendships!

FURTHER INFORMATION
* Each student will receive all general information regarding the academy by post during June.
* More specific information, such as timetables, allocation of study instruments etc will be distributed in the academy office during the academy. The academy office will be open daily from Sunday 20 July.
* Classes will be held daily except for Sundays. Each session will last two hours.
*
The professors will try to allow every active participant to play at least once during the specified course, but this cannot be guaranteed. Preparing the less-known works on the repertoire lists may increase the chance of the student being able to play.
* A number of participants, chosen by the professors, will have the opportunity to play during a public concert, which will be held in the St. Bavokerk on the evening of Friday.
* On Saturday 2 August, after the final classes, there will be a buffet reception.
* The number of active participants per course is limited to 16 students for a 4-day workshop, 20 for an 8-day course and 24 for a 12-day course.
* Each academy participant will receive a certificate of participation.

INSURANCE
The 'Stichting Internationaal Orgelconcours' cannot be held liable for the financial consequences of loss of property, theft, illness, accidents etc. We therefore advise participants to take out appropriate insurance.
