International Summer Academy for Organists 19 - 31 July 2010

Course on new organ music

The course on new organ music, directed by the internationally recognised avant-garde organist and composer Zsigmond Szathmáry and intended for young composers and organists, was first held at the 2008 Haarlem Summer Academy. Two new works by young Dutch composers were discussed during the four-day course and performed at a concert in St Bavo's church. Mr Szathmáry gave instruction on playing techniques and illustrated his teaching with examples from his own work.

In 2010, in addition to new works been written by two young Dutch composition students, an international call to young composers to submit new organ music has been issued. From the latter, two additional works will be selected for discussion at Mr Szathmáry's masterclass.

The four-day course is open to a limited number of auditors. Organists and organ composers are welcome to join in discussions on composing for the organ, focussing on the four new works and enjoying Mr Szathmáry's great expertise. Young Dutch organists will perform the new compositions during the course and at a festival concert on Friday 23 July 2010.
