14-28 July 2018
The 52nd Haarlem International Organ Festival has ended. Two years of hard work resulted in two weeks of musical energy! My personal highlights were the Opening Concert with the Requiem of Duruflé, with National Mixed Youth Choir, Sigvards Klava as conductor and Ben van Oosten as organist, both performances of sheng player Wu Wei (and his adventures with his two turtles!), and the second round of the Competition with dancer Kenzo Kusuda. But there was so much more!
Thanks to all performers, professors, jury members, improvisation competitors, B&B addresses, stop assistants, organ tuners, church wardens, volunteers, the air conditioning in the Festival Office and - of course - all 120 students of the Summer Academy! It was a privilege to organise this important event for all of you.
The preparations for the 53rd Festival already started. For your calendar: 18 July till 1 August 2020!
I wish you all the best!

Haarlem Organ Day
Saturday 14 July 2018 is the traditional upbeat to the festival. This year: a special Haarlem Organ Day for Kids! Several organ activities for children, like an exciting scavenger hunt with like building an organ, will take place at a number of locations in the historical centre of Haarlem. The spectacular ending will be… a surprise! Parents and grandparents are welcome too.
On Sunday 22 July the students of the Summer Academy will go on an excursion to the province of Groningen. Of course, the magnificent Schnitger organs in Martinikerk (1740) and Der Aa-kerk (1679, 1702, 1858) will be part of the program.
16 - 28 July 2018
21 masterclasses by 13 leading teachers on improvisation and five centuries of organ music
Application to take part in the Haarlem Summer Academy 2018 is now open!
Teachers including Olivier Latry, Vincent Thévenaz, Lorenzo Ghielmi, Ben van Oosten, Leo van Doeselaar and Franz Danksagmüller will direct masterclasses on the Müller organ in St Bavo's and the Cavaillé-Coll instrument in the Philharmonie concert hall.
On Sunday 22 July the Summer Academy will travel to Groningen. A luxury coach will bring us this day to the 'Organ Garden of Europe'. Don't miss this excursion!
16, 18 and 20 July 2018
Winning 'Haarlem' was, and still is, the first step to an international career.
The competition is open to organists with recital experience in improvisation. A new element in 2018 is that there is no age limit. Application for the 52nd International Organ Improvisation Competition is now open. The recording must be in our possession by March 1st 2018.
Next Haarlem International Organ Festival:
18 July - 1 August 2020
One of the longest established organ festivals in the world and still breaking new ground
The 53nd edition will be a true celebration of all that is to be enjoyed in organ improvisation and five centuries of organ music.
